History: Death Note Wiki. However, I will point out that this entry has some flaws and is also missing important information. So here's my addendum:
- B is an orphan. This is already implied by him living at Wammy's House, which is an orphanage, but the novel explains how his parents died. His father was murdered by a "thug", and sometime after that, his mother was killed in a train crash. It is stated that B had always known when they would die, in a paragraph that explains how being born with the shinigami eyes had twisted his personality. (Notice that both died of unnatural causes; imagine how lonely it would have been, being the only person who could know.)
- The wiki mentions that B "obviously could not have met L, given the fact that he did not know L's lifespan or real name." That's actually not a fact at all and should not be taken as such. The part in the novel where this came up was a portion where Mello, the narrator, was speculating. Mello actually does not know much of anything concerning B and L's relationship other than what he can assume based on his own experiences as a Wammy's kid. Therefore, since there IS no canon for it, that's something I will not address specifically unless an L apps.
And some supplemental things:
- In the novel "L change the WorLd", it is mentioned early on that the children of Wammy's are all assigned prestigious university teachers, researchers, and top specialists as tutors, hand-picked to best suit the strengths and weaknesses of the individual child. It also seems that the children of Wammy House can receive confidential files from the FBI (courtesy of L) and spend their days solving real murder cases from all across the globe. This provides insight into what kind of experience B was having during his years at Wammy's House.
Personality:
Not much is known about B as a child, however, we'll start with the one thing that was said: that he is "Brilliant and Deviant." We already know that B is brilliant, since he is one of the candidates for L's successor. He seems to be very proud of his skill and intelligence, and will try to give others advice or even test them personally. When it comes to 'deviance', though, it seems B enjoys acting strangely and making people uncomfortable. For example, when imitating L in canon, he exaggerates all of his traits and speaks bluntly to irritate Naomi Misora. She also catches him looking through a young female victim's panty drawer, crawling around on the ground, and eating jam straight from a jar with his bare hands. He enjoys the letter "B" so much, coming up with number combinations that can spell out "B" has developed into a habit bordering on the fetishistic.
As for interests, it would seem that B likes cutesy things. In canon, B as "Ryuzaki" babbles on to Misora about his love of the lighthearted mahou shoujo manga, Akazukin Chacha, as well as its TV anime. He also uses dolls and stuffed animals as part of his clue for the third crime scene.
A great deal of his personality is influenced by his education at Wammy's House. A lot of pressure is placed on them, and B tries to be very observant and alert at all times. One of the things that Wammy kids learn is how to monitor multiple TV screens, so he is also accustomed to multitasking. But the biggest thing he learned there is a certain kind of cutthroat competitiveness. Although Wammy's kids are merely supposed to be successors, B has come to see his current self as a "clone" of L that must surpass the original in order to have value. Rather than inherit the metaphorical throne, he wants to take it in a coup by being all-around better. To that end, everyone around him is viewed as a pawn. Indeed, B treats the whole thing like a high-stakes game, and cares more about winning than justice.
Which brings me to the special brand of apathy toward death that B possesses. Because B intuitively knows the exact date and time of death of every person he lays eyes on, he is desensitized to death; he ordinarily just doesn't give a shit if someone has died. There are exceptions - A's death shocked him because even though they were fellow candidates, he had never guessed it would be suicide. But he doesn't have much regard or sympathy for the victims in his cases, for example.
Abilities & physical limitations:
Physical skills
B is physically healthy, a pretty sturdy 13-year-old but with all the limitations you'd expect of someone his age; short, not very strong or muscular. He does, however, have commendable reflexes and speed; good at dodging and outrunning people.
Cognitive skills
B can recall explicit details very quickly, to the point where another character wondered if he had an eidetic memory. This may also be part of the reason for why he's so good at mimicking L, though their amount of past interaction is questionable.
Apparently he has an enormous vocabulary, as evidenced by his skills in cruciverbalism; he crafted a crossword puzzle that was too difficult to solve for a police force working together, but solvable by L.
Superhuman skills
Shinigami eyes - Although most shinigami eyes require a trade of half of a Death Note user's lifespan, B's were acquired congenitally through unknown means. The eyes raise a human's vision 3.6 times their current seeing ability, and cannot be detected by any scientific or supernatural means - not even other shinigami can tell if a human has the eyes. But most importantly, the shinigami eyes allow the user to see the true full name of any human, as well as seeing a strange array of numbers that represents the person's lifespan. Rather than a countdown, it is a fixed number that is assumed to be some sort of Shinigami code, which Beyond Birthday has somehow understood intuitively for as long as he's had the eyes. The only limitation is that he has to see the person's face - whether it be in person or from a photo or a video doesn't matter though, as long as it's clear. This is his only supernatural ability, but it has warped his personality considerably. Notable is that, in the novel, he kills in tandem with his shinigami eyes.
"In most cases, defense wounds are a key element in identifying the killer, but in this case the victims all died as if it were only natural for them to have done so."
Basically, if a person is fated to die according to the numbers, he can kill them effortlessly (and if they're not fated to die, he won't even try to kill them. The eyes help him pick his battles.)
Other skills shown by B in the novel:
- Detective training; Particularly, he has been trained to stack up to L as a "great detective", which I suppose implies he is trained in all things detective-like possible, because L himself is kind of ... ridiculously superspecial.
- Mimicry as stated.
- Considerable skill with prosthetic makeup; His "mask" was able to pass as a real face.
- Mechanical skills; able to rig clever contraptions, hotwire cars, etc.
- Can clean up a crime scene impossibly well. I'm serious; he is stated to have left NO evidence whatsoever. (Which I admit is nonsense, but it's canon, so w/e, he is a crime wizard deal with it.)
Appearance: Something like this - at this stage B has not begun to fully imitate L, although he kind of copies the hair and voice a little.
Notable AU differences from canon, if applicable: This B is a child, while the canon B is an adult. Therefore most examples I've given to explain his character have not happened yet, and I will be working backwards from them. His skills (apart from shinigami eyes and memory) will not be fully developed. Additionally, the adult B is severely depressed and desperate to defeat L to the point of using his own suicide as the weapon against him. Young B, by comparison, has a lot of hope and vitality to spare.
Strife Specibus: Clubkind
Prototyping: Magical Princess Figurine (and A's dead body???)
Title: Brave of Blaze
In-game abilities: Command over fire, fairly straightforward abilities.
Planet: Land of Jails and Jam (LOJAJ)
Although there a few forest areas, LOJAJ is mainly a barren and mountainous land, where scalding hot jam flows out in rivers from constantly erupting jam volcanoes to be collected by the Bee consorts upon cooling. In many of the dormant volcanoes, jails have been carved into caves in the side by the denizen, Enma, who has become the planet's 'judge' and occasionally uses the underlings to imprison the consorts in said jails. Most notable of the jailed is the consort's Queen Bee.
